Elephants on the Serengeti in Kenya

by Jon Rochetti on August 16th, 2008

Elephants seen on safari in Kenya's Masai Mara in the Northern Serengeti game reserve

Location: Serengeti National Park game reserve
Destination: Masai Mara
Country: Kenya, Africa
Year Taken: 2007

Taken while on safari in Kenya.

The Serengeti is probably the world’s greatest game reserve. Over 450 different species of animals and birds have been recorded in the park. It’s also the site of the great wildebeest migration, which occurs every year between July and October.

And if one of these bull elephants charges you, the correct thing to yell in Swahili is Hatari! (Danger!)

    Hey there, Jon,

Thanks for posting this. The trip occured during the summer before the December riots last year. We were there in the Masai Mara in time for the wildebeest migration–I have photos of them as well–but the buggers never crossed the Mara River while we were there. They were too busy eating grass! There were thousands of them. Amazing.

As for the elephants, they’ll just sand there while you take your photographs–and you’re so close. They’re not like the giraffes at all, who run off when the jeeps get too close. And the lions? Yikes! They walk right past the front of the jeep, like they’re taunting you, daring you to step out in front of them.

If you ever get a chance to go to Kenya, I recommend the Fairmont Mara Safari Club. It’s upscale, very nice, and everyone’s friendly beyond belief.

    Jackie
